Influential books

There are a few books that greatly influences my own writing--not just with ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, but with my writing in general as well.

  • THE HERO AND THE CROWN by Robin McKinley. You know that one scene where Aerin is coughing and Tor and Arlbeth have to just watch? I consider that to be one of the most perfect scenes ever written.
  • THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA by CS Lewis. These were the books that made me believe books were magical.
  • HARRY POTTER SERIES by JK Rowling. These are among the few books that I can read over and over and over and never get tired of.
  • MOUSETRAP by Agatha Christie. A play instead of a book--but trust me, she's the master of mystery no matter what the format.
  • ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card and THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX by Mary Pearson. These books showed me that science fiction need not be political quagmires weighed down with scientific detail.
  • FUSHIGI YUGI by Yu Watase. I love how Watase-san shows consequences and doesn't resolve everything with a pretty bow on top.
  • THE THIEF by Megan Whalen-Turner. The twisty ending and unreliable narrator in this one are perfectly done.
